Part 4: The Confrontation
I spun around, clutching the tape player to my chest.
Standing in the frame of the garage door, framed by the moonlight, was my husband. Mark looked aged, drawn, and paler than I had ever seen him. In his hand, he held a duplicate key to the garage lock.
“Sarah…” he whispered, his voice cracking with sheer terror. “You weren’t supposed to find this yet.”
“You monster,” I gasped, the grief turning into a white-hot rage that shook my entire body. “You gave our daughter away?! You watched me lose my mind for twenty years!”
“I saved her life!” Mark yelled, stepping into the garage and closing the door behind him. Tears streamed down his face. “You don’t understand what those people were capable of, Sarah! When I stumbled into that story in Cairo, they didn’t just threaten me—they put a photo of Tara in my apartment desk with a bullet hole through her forehead!”
“So you gave her to them?!”
“I didn’t give her to them!” Mark pleaded, reaching out a hand that I immediately struck away. “I begged my highest-ranking contact in the Egyptian ministry for help. He arranged for a wealthy, protected family in Alexandria to take her in under a false identity! It was the only way to make the syndicate believe she had been eliminated so they would stop hunting us!”
“You lied to me every single day!” I screamed, tears blinding my vision. “You let me live in hell!”
“Because if you knew, you would have gone to the authorities, and they would have found out she was alive!” Mark wept, dropping to his knees on the concrete. “I took the burden of the lie so she could survive!”
“Then who sent the postcard, Mark?” I asked, holding up the picture of Cairo. “Who sent me the address to this garage yesterday?”
Mark looked at the postcard in my hand, and his eyes went wide with pure horror.
“I didn’t send that,” Mark whispered. “Sarah… I didn’t send that postcard.”
