Part 3: The Tape
The silence of the garage was suffocating as the truth began to unravel the last twenty years of my life. The man who had held me while I wept, the man who had pretended to search the streets of Cairo for our missing girl, had been the architect of my endless nightmare.
I grabbed the cassette player resting at the bottom of the chest, popped in a tape labeled Alexandria – 2008, and pressed play.
A static hiss filled the small garage, followed by the deep, familiar voice of my husband speaking to an unknown woman with a heavy Arabic accent.
“How is she?” Mark’s recorded voice asked, laced with heavy guilt.
“She is growing well, Mark,” the woman replied. “She speaks fluent Arabic now. She calls me mother. She believes her original family died in an accident, just as you instructed.”
“Does she… does she ever ask about her real mother?”
“Sometimes. But we keep her busy. The family who adopted her has raised her like royalty. She wants for nothing. But you can never come back here, Mark. The men who threatened your life twenty years ago still monitor the ports.”
I pressed my hand over my mouth to stifle a scream. Tara wasn’t dead. She hadn’t been hurt. She had been raised by strangers across the world while I spent two decades grieving an empty grave.
Mark hadn’t just given her away to protect his career—he had traded our daughter to settle a debt with an investigative source after uncovering an international trafficking syndicate he was never supposed to investigate.
Suddenly, the headlights of a car swept across the garage floor. A door slammed outside.
Footsteps approached in the dark.
Read Part 4 below to see who followed her to the garage.
